New Opportunities Portfolio rolls out
The new portfolio tracking information is now up on the Opportunities Portfolio page. The effective date of the new tracking is October 1, 2008 and the initial stock positions were entered at the Sept. 30 closing price. I was a little worried that re-starting the portfolio at that time would look opportunistic because the market had fallen so far. During the next two days the value of the stocks in the portfolio fell by 10%, so now I worry for other reasons. Starting value of the portfolio was $40,000. Commissions of $4.95 were figured into each initial position, so the portfolio started Oct 1 at slightly less than the $40k.
I started the portfolio with most of the stocks from the previous version. I gave the positions different weightings based on my thoughts of each stocks relative potential, stability and riskiness. The portfolio started out with 18 different stocks and about 20% in cash. I added what I call a “nibble” position of Green Hunter Energy (GRH: 1.3901 +0.1601 +13.02%) today. I rate position sizes as either full, half, or nibble.
With the market down so far over the last few weeks I could not resist adding a couple of targeted funds that I like:
- iShares Emerging Markets Index Fund (EEM: 42.05 +0.45 +1.08%): This ETF gives broad based access to emerging market stocks. Down about 20% YTD. A half position.
- Swiss Helvetia Fund (SWZ: 11.84 +0.04 +0.34%) Exposure to Swiss large cap stocks, especially pharmaceuticals, food and beverage and banking. SWZ also give exposure to the stable Swiss franc. The fund is down 12% YTD and is trading at an 18% discount to NAV. A nibble position.
I also included the two high income stocks I wrote about last week: (SBLK: 2.81 +0.06 +2.18%) and (AWP: 6.59 +0.06 +0.92%). I also added one new stock, Banco Lantinoamericano de Exportaciones (BLX: 14.72 -0.08 -0.54%) better know as Bladex. I will have my analysis of Bladex up by Monday.
I am looking forward to the longer term management of this new version of my Opportunities Portfolio. Note: This is a hypothetical portfolio for informational purposes only, please do your own research before making any investment decisions.
